Revised passenger train schedule for the Housatonic Railroad through
Great Barrington traveling north and south and originating / connecting / terminating in Pittsfield and originating/terminating/
connecting
in Bridgeport CT published in The Berkshire Courier Wednesday May 26,
1869. It is interesting that the effective date of the schedule was
Monday May 3, 1869, more than 3 weeks earlier than publication. So this
was pertinent news for Great Barrington and written to refle
ct
Great Barrington passage times. Passage normally indicated a stop of
only several minutes. The passenger schedule does not specifically
include the times of train passage at Canaan but it is possible to
estimate the approximate time all northbound and south bounds between
Pittsfield and Bridgeport would have passed through Canaan. Note at
the bottom of the schedule that all Bridgeport-Pittsfield freight
trains bound both directions stopped in Canaan later in the day for
about 12 hours or more. Freight trains were involved in numerous
switching activities along the route and typically this was done in
daylight hours. Article courtesy Canaan Union Depot Railroad Station
